Era una selección de cuentos de suspenso, presentados por Rod Serling, el mismo anfitrión de DIMENSIÓN DESCONOCIDA, quien aparecía en una oscura galería de arte donde cada pieza tenía una macabra historia. El piloto original fue protagonizado por Joan Crawford como una ambiciosa mujer ciega a quien operan para darle el sentido de la vista por unas pocas horas pero cuando lo recupera, se produce un apagón en la ciudad y no puede ver nada! El episodio fue dirigido por Steven Spielberg, quien en esa época se dedicaba a dirigir episodios de Columbo.
Así presentaba Rod Serling este programa a mediados de los años 70: "Buenas noches, y bienvenidos a esta presentación privada de tres cuadros, que se enseñan aquí por vez primera. Cada uno es una pieza de coleccionista, no por la calidad artística, sino porque cada uno captura en su lienzo, suspendido en el tiempo y el espacio, un gélido momento de una pesadilla."
La serie trataba temas fantásticos y de ciencia-ficción, que se combinaban con un humor irónico, que hacía que en ocasiones lo que era una terrible historia se convirtiera en una comedia terrorífica.
Su presentador siempre fue Rod Serling (responsable de la también serie "Dimensión Desconocida" - "Twilight Zone" cinco años antes y de "El Planeta de los Simios"). Aunque en ocasiones se presentó como programa en sí mismo, normalmente era parte del programa "Cuatro en Uno" ("Four in One"), rotando su aparición con "Mcloud", "San Francisco International Airport" y "The Psychiatrist", con lo cual su periodo de emisión era una vez cada cuatro semanas.
"Galeria Nocturna" consistía en tres asombrosas historias cortas, presentadas por Serling a través de unos cuadros que nos introducían en las diferentes tramas, que estaban protagonizadas por grandes actores como: Cesar Romero, John Carradine, Carl Reiner, Virginia Mayo, Susan Strasberg, Leslie Nielsen, David Carradine, Patrick O'Neal, James Farentino, Vincent Price, Ray Milland, Sue Lyon, Joseph Campanella, Martine Bestwick, Henry Silva, Burguess Meredith, Diane Keaton, Roddy McDowall, Joan Crawford o Barry Sullivan.
Los argumentos iban de la historia de una multimillonaria ciega que compra unos ojos para ver aunque sólo sea durante 12 horas ("Eyes"), un sobrino asesino de su tío que acaba siendo poseído por una pintura de la familia ("The Cemetery"), un nazi que acaba encontrando su merecido en un lejano país sudamericano ("The Escape Route"), la historia de un hombre que es resucitado de la muerte a través de hipnosis ("The Dead Man")
