Derek Jarman fue uno de los directores vanguardistas del BFI (British Film Institute).  Jarman explicaba la necesidad de aludir a la tradición inglesa para manifestar su disconformidad con la decadencia cultura de la época de Margaret Thatcher.  Se formó como pintor y fue un cineasta autodidacta, excepto una corta experiencia como escenógrafo de dos películas de Ken Russell, un director que había influenciado sus posteriores trabajos cinematográficos, al igual que Pier Paolo Pasolini, a quien Jarman consideraba un verdadero modelo a seguir.  Al final de su vida Jarman gozaba de pleno reconocimiento como cineasta y pintor.  De acuerdo con su testamento, fue incinerado y sus cenizas fueron mezcladas con un pigmento negro con que se cubrieron unos lienzos que él mismo había preparado antes, dando de entender que de este modo cual era su actividad principal: "un pintor que hacía películas, antes que un cineasta que pintaba cuadros."

La obra de Derek Jarman se inscribe dentro de la corriente neovanguardista junto con Peter Greenaway, John Marbury y Sally Potter.  En la obra de estos cineastas se puede percibir una vinculación estética e influencias formales y estilísticas con las artes plásticas.  Jarman y Greenaway son quizás los representantes más destacados de esta corriente.  Su obra se puede calificar como regreso al modelo del cine de las vanguardias hidtóricas por su búsqueda del arte total y la renovación del lenguaje cinematográfico basada en la fusión de las artes - poesía, teatro, pintura, escultura, música-.

Aunque de que Jarman y Greenaway utilizan medios de expresión parecidos lo hacen con finalidades distinas.  Jarman introduce en sus películas elementos ideológicos, de manera directa y con gran carga emocional.  Greenaway, a cambio, se interesa más por la teoría del arte, reflexiones sobre la cultura y arte contemporáneo, el futuro del medio cinematográfico, se opone al "cine de empatía" y considera que el cine tradicional ha muerto debido a falta de innovación formal.  También expone sus ideas políticas, pero aparecen de manera menos evidentes y bajo metáforas de personajes destructivos.  Se opone a la comercialización de la cultura y la invasión de las producciones de Hollywood.

El estilo de Peter Greenaway es más racional, en comparación con el fervor activista de Jarman, su experimentación formal parte del post-estructuralismo, se inspira también en la música contemporánea.  El sistema representativo de sus películas es más complicado que el de Jarman, Greenaway crea estructuras visuales y narrativas muy complejas y con una rigurosidad, derivada del minimalismo musical de Michael Nyman, Philip Glass y/o la prosa de Borges.
