Me sorprendió esta película, ya que soy de los que odian estas sagas que encima son secuelas de Spin-offs de una secuela (The Mummy Returns en donde aparecía El Rey Escorpión hecho en un CGI absolutamente vergonzoso).
The Scorpion King (2002, Chuck Russell) nos trajo a Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) junto a Kelly Hu, Michael Clarke Duncan (The Green Mile) y Bernard Hill (Titanic, LOTR). El director de A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987),la remake de The Blob (1988) y The Mask (1994) dirigía su 6ta. película.
Desde entonces Chuck no ha vuelto a dirigir cine, aunque tiene un proyecto de 70 millones para el 2014 titulado Arabian Nights con Liam Hemsworth como Ali Baba y rumores de Dwayne Johnson como Sinbad !!!
La segunda parte fue una precuela, The Scorpion King 2: Rise Of A Warrior (2008, Russell Mulcahy) con un elenco de desconocidos para los que no seguimos la lucha libre americana que incluía a Randy Couture y con el director de Highlander y Highlander II que luego de una década de películas que incluyeron Blue Ice (1992), The Real McCoy (1993), The Shadow (1994) y Silent Trigger (1996) empezaría a dirigir proyectos cada vez más chiquititos como Tale Of The Mummy (1998), Resurrection (1999, Swimming Upstream (2003), First To Die (2004) y Mysterious Island (2005).
La miniserie The Curse Of King Tut's Tomb (2006) fue su segundo proyecto onda "La Momia", luego hizo una de terror llamada The Sitter (2007) y el mismo año Resident Evil: Extinction (2007). Crash And Burn (2007) y Give 'Em Hell Malone (2009) demuestran que no ha perdido su estilo a pesar de haber dirigido para el mercado del video esa precuela de The Scorpion King. LA india Karen David y la africana Natalie Becker eran las perlitas de esa película.
Sinceramente no la ví esa película, pero ahora que veo a estas chicas, la voy a rastrear en TehParadox.com .
Y llegamos entonces a The Scorpion King 3 (2012, Roel Reiné) con un sorprendente Victor Webster (1.91 mts. de altura) quien fuera uno de los protagonistas masculinos de la serie Mutant X y como invitado y/o regular en muchas otras series pero sin una carrera en el cine salvo alguna que otra cosita. Junto a él están Billy Zane, Ron Perlman, Dave Bautista y Bostin Christopher.
Esta tercera película es una secuela de la precuela, así que como que no tiene que ver con nada y por eso está buena. Tampoco es una maravilla, pero visualmente está muy lograda, muy bien filmada. O sea, tiene la misma particularidad que THE HANGOVER II, está filmada en Tailandia, que es un lugar bellísimo para filmar películas por lo que veo (y seguramente barato).
Bostin Christopher, hace de Olaf, un "Brutus" gracioso, "sidekick" del personaje de Victor Webster (Mathayus). Este actor aparece brevemente en Unbreakable (2000) como el que atiende la tienda de comics. Y Victor Webster también laburó en una peli con Bruce Willis, en Surrogates (2009). Probablemente su mejor rol fue el protagónico en Otis (2008).
Ah, y para completarla, esta película cuenta con un par de bellezas locales: Selina Lo (nacida en Inglaterra pero de raza oriental) y Krystal Vee (nativa de Bangkok, Tailandia).
En definitiva, y a pesar de mis prejuicios (y de toda lógica), esta saga pareciera que mejora cada vez que tiene menos presupuesto y protagonistas y directores menos famosos que los anteriores. Como que sudarla les viene bien a los de Hollywood para conseguir algo medianamente decente como para editar directo en video.
Me atrevo a decir que Scorpion King 3 es la joyita de esta trilogía, creer o reventar. Veanla ! (ojo, es para ver con el cerebro apagado, pero eso es obvio, ¿ no ? ). Disfrutenla por lo que es.

- Audio Commentary – Famed director, Roel Reiné, of schlock sequels like 'Death Race 2' and 'The Marine 2' hosts this lively, and surprisingly informative chat about the movie. Of course he thinks the movie is the greatest thing ever, but he really gets down and dirty when it comes to the nuts and bolts of filming a movie. He discusses the small budget of which he can't actually mention, but said you could count it on one hand. He talks about how difficult it was to create certain shots. He discusses their time filming in Thailand, and the short shooting schedule of only 25 days to finish the whole movie. While the movie is a piece of junk, this is actually an informative commentary, even if it does just teach you how to make a really crappy sequel. Although, my favorite bit has to be when he talks about actually picking to do this movie off of a list handed to him by Universal where they essentially said, "Here, pick one of these you want to do and do it."
- Deleted/Extended Scenes (HD, 13 min.) – Not much to talk about here. There's a few scenes included, but nothing of consequence. The only real "noteworthy" scene is an alternate opening that features Mathyus eating cooked bugs. Yeah, that's why I put noteworthy in quotes.
- Gag Reel (HD, 2 min.) – Considering the whole movie is a gag reel, what's another two minutes huh? Actors laughing and messing up lines.
- Swords and Scorpions: A Making Of (HD, 13 min.) – Here we get a making of that is more promotional fluff than anything. The actors talk about how privileged they are to act on the movie and how great it is to shoot in Thailand.
- Preparing for Battle (HD, 6 min.) – An overview of the action in the movie. Interviews with the actors saying it's a movie that's packed full of so much action you won't know what to do with yourself. Blah, blah, blah. The action in the movie stinks. The choreography and realism is like watching old home movies of me rough housing with my brother, only with canned sound effects.
