Clive Owen es una figura que se ha destacado en producciones como Closer, Sin City, Inside Man y Children of Men. Por su parte, Naomi Watts ha paseado su belleza por películas como The Ring, Ned Kelly, 21 Grams y King Kong. Ambos actores, en esta oportunidad, comparten cartel en la película The International.
En este filme, Clive Owen es Louis Salinger, un agente de la Interpol que se encuentra en la investigación de un importante banco que está involucrado en el tráfico de armas y lavado de dinero. La investigación no será sencilla, por lo cual necesitará la ayuda de Eleanor Whitman, una abogada interpretada por Naomi Watts.
